Around 20 athletes will be representing Slovakia at the 24th European Cross Country Championships held in Šamorín on 10 December 2017. So far, over 556 runners from 35 countries have registered for the event. The Slovak Athletic Association is planning on assigning athletes to each individual competition. It is yet to be confirmed whether the Slovak team will run in the mixed relay of 4 x 1.5m.
“The relay is an open race and two of our best athletes, Jozef Pelikán and Jozef Repčík, have already expressed interest in participating. The situation with allocating the remaining places to female athletes has been complicated. It is yet to be seen whether we will be able to find two suitable female runners who could run in the relay,” said the main coach of the Slovak Athletic Association (SAA) for long runs, Pavel Kováč.
Martin Pupiš, chief trainer of SAA would also welcome a Slovak relay team at the European Championships held at x-bionic® sphere in Šamorín.
“I think we have a chance to achieve a nice result in this discipline, hence we will do our best to form a team. We need to find suitable athletes who fulfil the expectations at the international level as well. I hope that two month before the event at the latest, the questions surrounding the relay will be answered,” said Pupiš. The athletes in question are Katarína Beľová, Martina Šamudovská či Ľubomíra Maníková.
